Modern Practices in Public Engagement

Saturday, May 20, 2023: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. - Modern Practices in Public Engagement Public budget hearings, citizen surveys, and town hall meetings are all timeless options that local governments have come to rely on to satisfy basic requirements for public engagement. It is widely recognized that governments should do a better job at engaging the public during the budget process. However, as political polarization becomes the leading social rift of our time, the need for improved public engagement takes on a new urgency. Distrust of experts, loss of faith in institutions, and the politics of cynicism add to the challenge. In this session, attendees will learn how to plan a modern public engagement strategy that includes technology, focuses on getting meaningful participation from a diverse community, and facilitates productive conversations.
